An overview of Listeria monocytogenes contamination in ready to eat meat, dairy and fishery foods Ciência Rural
Rodrigues,Carla Susana; Sá,Cláudia Valéria Gonçalves Cordeiro de; Melo,Cristiano Barros de.
ABSTRACT: Listeria monocytogenes is a relevant foodborne pathogen in public health, responsible for outbreaks of listeriosis often associated to the consumption of ready to eat meat, dairy and fishery products. Listeriosis is a serious disease that can lead to death and mainly affect children, the elderly and immunocompromised individuals. In pregnant women causes abortion or neonatal listeriosis. In Brazil, ready to eat food are appreciated and increasingly consumed by the population. Furthermore, products such as sausages, bologna, hams and cheeses have characteristics such as pH, Aw and sodium chloride content that favor the development of L. monocytogenes during their shelf life. The purpose of this paper was to present an overview of L. monocytogenes...

Identification of Listeria monocytogenes in cattle meat using biochemical methods and amplification of the hemolysin gene Anais da ABC (AABC)
SILVA,ALESSANDRA S.; DUARTE,ELIZABETH A.A.; OLIVEIRA,THIAGO A.S. DE; EVANGELISTA-BARRETO,NORMA S..
Abstract In Brazil and in other countries of the world, studies have been conducted to identify Listeria monocytogenes in cattle meat that is preferably consumed undercooked and, when marketed without meeting strict phytosanitary requirements, may cause outbreaks of listeriosis. In the such, foodborne outbreaks, the methods used for the detection of the pathogen and the efficiency associated with them are crucial for the proper assessment. In this study, we used the techniques biochemical and molecular for identification of the L. monocytogenes isolated from 30 samples of the fresh beef, marketed in ten butchers’ shop of the free-fair from a municipality from the Bahia, Brazil. The results obtained from biochemical tests (catalase, motility, β-hemolysis...

Listeria monocytogenes in HIV-infected patients in a hospital of Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil J. Venom. Anim. Toxins incl. Trop. Dis.
Norberg,A. N.; Maure,E. A. P.; Svaiter,N.; Gonçalves,A. S.; Sanches,F. G..
A survey was carried out in a hospital of Nova Iguaçu, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in the period from July 1999 to March 2002, to determine the infection rate of Listeriamonocytogenes in HIV+ patients with diarrhea symptoms; 134 samples were processed by microbiological methods. The results demonstrated 12.68% of positive samples. However, no statistical differences were observed for age or sex in the studied group, suggesting that this microorganism should be regarded in the differential diagnosis of infectious processes in HIV+ patients in the area.

Occurrence of Listeria monocytogenes in silages assessed by fluorescent in situ hybridization Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Oliveira,M.; Guerra,M.; Bernardo,F..

Pheno- and genotypic characterization of Listeria monocytogenes clinical isolates from the southwestern region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil BJM
Lemes-Marques,Eneida Gonçalves; Cruz,Cristina Durante; Destro,Maria Teresa.
Considering the lack of information available in Brazil concerning listeriosis, the present study aimed to analyze phenotypic and genotypically Listeria monocytogenes clinical isolates from the Southwestern region of the State of São Paulo, Brazil. From January 1995 to May 2005, thirteen isolates of L. monocytogenes from twelve patients with listeriosis were sent to the Adolfo Lutz Institute (Campinas Regional Laboratory, São Paulo, Brazil). The antimicrobial susceptibility of the isolates was evaluated by the microdilution broth method for ampicillin, gentamicin, trimethoprim, sulfamethoxazole and vancomycin. They were also serotyped (Denka Seiken, Japan), and sub-typed by PFGE employing ApaI and AscI and the American CDC protocol. None of the isolates...

Prevalence and serotype distribution of Listeria monocytogenes isolated from foods in Montevideo-Uruguay BJM
Braga,Valeria; Vázquez,Sylvia; Vico,Victoria; Pastorino,Valeria; Mota,María Inés; Legnani,Marcela; Schelotto,Felipe; Lancibidad,Gustavo; Varela,Gustavo.
ABSTRACT The aim of this work was to study the prevalence of Listeria monocytogenes in foods obtained in retail shops and food industries located in Montevideo-Uruguay, and to identify the serogroups of the obtained isolates. Three-thousand one-hundred and seventy-five food samples (frozen, deli meats, ready-to-eat and cheese) were analyzed. The obtained isolates were serogrouped by multiplex PCR and serotyped by conventional procedure. Genetic comparisons were performed using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis on a sub-set of isolates belonging to the same serotype successively recovered from the same establishment. L. monocytogenes was isolated from 11.2% of samples. The highest prevalence was observed in frozen foods (38%), followed by cheese (10%). 1/2b...

Virulence genes and genetic relationship of L. monocytogenes isolated from human and food sources in Brazil BJID
Almeida,Rosana Macedo de; Barbosa,André Victor; Lisbôa,Rodrigo de Castro; Santos,André Felipe das Mercês; Hofer,Ernesto; Vallim,Deyse Christina; Hofer,Cristina Barroso.
ABSTRACT The herein presented assay provided a bacteriological and molecular characterization of 100 samples of L. monocytogenes isolated from human (43) and food (57) sources, from several regions of Brazil, and collected between 1975 and 2013. Antigenic characterization defined 49% of serotype 4b samples, followed by 28% of serotype 1/2b, 14% of serotype 1/2c, 8% of serotype 1/2a, and 1% of serotype 3b. Both type of samples from human and food origin express the same serotype distribution. Multiplex PCR analysis showed 13 strains of type 4b with the amplification profile 4b-VI (Variant I). Virulence genes hly, inlA, inlB, inlC, inlJ, actA, plcA, and prfA were detected in all samples, highlighting a deletion of 105pb on the actA gene in 23% of serotype 4b...
